It is one of the most popular air conditioning systems; the price varies according to the square footage, and its initial cost is offset by its low consumption.

Home air conditioning is one of the most important aspects to consider when looking for comfort in a home . Among the various options currently available, radiant floor heating is one of the most popular.

According to engineer Miguel Tepedino and Pablo Zelener, partners of the company ZT Clima , if we want to give a simple explanation of how it works, we can say that it is based on a boiler that heats water which is distributed through a pipe installed under the floor .

"This floor receives the heat transfer from the pipe and then transfers it to the environment," explains Zelener. He clarifies that this is a system that can be used in any room , including garages, open-air porches, barbecue areas, and more.

As for its benefits, the ZT Clima partner assures that one of the main ones is the emission of uniform and comfortable heat , both in small and large environments, and it can also be installed in any type of construction .

Another advantage is that it's an invisible piece of equipment that doesn't take up space, unlike more traditional air conditioning systems such as heaters, air conditioning units, radiators, and so on.

Furthermore, Tepedino and Zelener explain that it's a clean and safe system, unlike others. For example, gas stoves carry a risk of poor evacuation of gases such as carbon monoxide. Furthermore, over time, they stain the paint on the wall above the stove, causing dirt that must be removed frequently. Meanwhile, water-based radiators also stain the wall above the radiator over time and take up space, limiting the layout of furniture. "If you opt for electric radiators, depending on their capacity, you must ensure that the diameters of the cables installed in the wall are capable of supplying them, as well as the outlets. In short, they pose a potential electrical risk ," they warn. While they emphasize that radiant floor heating simply transfers hot water under the floor, risk-free, without taking up space, and without making a mess.

Another advantage is that underfloor heating requires no ongoing maintenance, and once it's regulated and operational, it requires no further manipulation.

What is the cost per square meter?

Regarding costs, ZT Clima emphasizes that the average price per square meter varies depending on the area and construction characteristics . However, estimated values are $65,000/m² for areas up to 100 m² ; $55,000/m² for areas between 100 m² and 200 m²; and $50,000/m² for areas over 200 m².

Other information to keep in mind about radiant heating is that it is an easy-to-operate system , so the person can turn it on whenever they feel cold. In addition, it has a room thermostat to maintain the desired temperature and can be activated automatically when it drops.

"It's usually turned on in the fall and winter, but it can be used whenever it's cold. In places with consistently low temperatures, it can be kept running year-round," Zelener explains.

Regarding the energy source used, experts point out that boilers can run on gas or electricity . "In places with natural gas, natural gas is often used because it's cheaper than electricity or bottled gas," he says. He concludes that, although the initial investment is more costly than that required for a gas heater, radiant floor heating pays for itself through lower gas or electricity consumption, safety, and the significant difference in comfort compared to other systems.
